Dr Lazarus Chakwera creates an employment gap through his appointment of Charles Kalumo a retired Brigadier General as the new Director General for the Department of Immigration and Citizen Services.
Despite retiring from the army as a Brigadier General in 1994, Kalumo has secured himself a job after Chakwera appointed him as the Malawi Chief Immigration Officer, Gospel Kazako, the Minister of information confirmed the appointment.
The development comes right after the Parliament passed a Court Amendment Bill which moves the Malawian Judges retiring age from 65 which was the current to 70. Justice Minister Titus Mvalo argued that the country needs experienced judges in order to ensure justice efficiency in the country hence the passing of the bill is reasonable.
Kalumo is replacing Elvis thodi who was arrested in 2021 on corruption charges together with Department's Deputy Director Limbani Chawinga following the investigation that was done by Anti-Corruption Bureau.
However, in Tonse Alliance's campaign President Lazarus Chakwera promised to create 1 million jobs among the youths which he believed could be achieved through the Agriculture Affordable Input (AIP) program, giving tax incentives to businesses that employ youth as well as creating job spaces in government sectors.
According to the World Bank, Youth Unemployment Rate for Malawi was 9.52% in January of 2020 and has currently increased with 0.31% making 9.85% unemployment among youth.

The inability for President Lazarus Chakwera to create 1 million jobs for us the youth has caused so many chaos in our lives. It has lead to depression, early marriages, committing suicide, drug abuse, and whatever u can it, only to get lead of the problems and pain of what that job could have solved. We not going to stay silent until a change has been seen .
ReplyDeleteWe believe job's are there, in the government mostly if only those who have proceeded their working years were to retire.. Don't use the excuse of, we need more experienced people to work in the government, and if you don't give chances to work, how are we going to be experienced?
I believe Mr Chakwera has aslo been in the youth age , making him well known to the problems we the youth suffer so He better make room for the 1 million jobs before its too late.
